The Cobb County District Attorney's office says thieves are targeting pickup trucks during car break-ins near the Cumberland Mall.

The DA's office says criminals, some of them gang members, are driving around in large vans looking for pickup trucks to break into. Law enforcement says the burglars are looking for firearms, and often times people believe those who drive pickup trucks own guns.

CBS46 spoke to one man who says he understands why people believe many pickup truck drivers own guns, however, he's not taking any chances keeping his gun inside his truck.

"I have a pickup truck but I don't leave a gun inside. There's other ways to handle things. I can see their thinking...a lot of guys that drive pickups have guns," Joe Walraven said.

A spokesperson for the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms tells CBS46 that when guns are stolen, they're either shipped up north or used to commit other crimes locally.

The DA's office says that Cobb County police are beefing up patrols in the area.
