Passenger in vehicle shot by police following incident near Cobb County bank

COBB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Police say a passenger in a vehicle was shot by officers after he allegedly opened fire on them outside a bank in Cobb County Tuesday.

The shooting occurred around 5:30 p.m. outside a Fidelity Bank at Cobb Parkway and Bells Ferry Road, although the bank had nothing to do with the incident. 

Officers pulled over a car that fit the description of one involved in an armed robbery. Police say when they pulled the car over, the passenger got out and started shooting.

Officers returned fire and hit him. The driver surrendered peacefully.

The passenger was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Witness Russell Atkins saw the incident unfold.

"He got out really quick. Right as soon as the car stopped he was out and he was running backwards shooting at them," said Atkins. "I dropped down over there on the grass because I didn't want to get hit by a stray bullet. I thought that was crazy."

Police did not provide the identity of the passenger who was shot.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation.

    The suspect is described as a black male, possibly in his 30's, and was seen wearing a camouflage jacket, dark pants and riding a blue and white Suzuki GSX-R sport motorcycle.

    On February 27, 2014 each of the three women failed to provide appropriate medical attention to James Dempsey as he called out for help at the Northeast Atlanta Rehabilitation Center in Brookhaven, according to authorities.
