COBB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Police say a passenger in a vehicle was shot by officers after he allegedly opened fire on them outside a bank in Cobb County Tuesday.

The shooting occurred around 5:30 p.m. outside a Fidelity Bank at Cobb Parkway and Bells Ferry Road, although the bank had nothing to do with the incident.

Officers pulled over a car that fit the description of one involved in an armed robbery. Police say when they pulled the car over, the passenger got out and started shooting.

Officers returned fire and hit him. The driver surrendered peacefully.

The passenger was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Witness Russell Atkins saw the incident unfold.

"He got out really quick. Right as soon as the car stopped he was out and he was running backwards shooting at them," said Atkins. "I dropped down over there on the grass because I didn't want to get hit by a stray bullet. I thought that was crazy."

Police did not provide the identity of the passenger who was shot.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation.
