Georgia takes the crown as the top filming location in the world according to a new study. More feature films were shot in the Peach State in 2016 than anywhere else.

“Spider-man: Homecoming” debuts in theaters in July but last summer Ricky Nicholson watched as they filmed right next to Underground Atlanta.

“I saw Spider-man when he went up in the air at Rainbow,” Nicholson recalled. The Rainbow clothing shop is across Peachtree Street from New York men’s store where Nicholson works.

“I feel real good about them shooting a lot of movies here… it make Atlanta feel real popular,” Nicholson suggested.

"Film LA" analyzed the 100 highest-performing US feature films of 2016. Of the top 100, 17 were filmed in Georgia more than anywhere else in the world.

“We now have over a dozen really full-fledged studios,” said Carrie Burns, Co-founder of Atlanta Movie Tours. The company offers 10 different tours of places in Georgia used as film and TV backdrops. Burns knows all about the Georgia-made 2016 blockbusters including Passengers, Hidden Figures, Allegiant, and Captain America: Civil War.

“The amount of budgets is just increasing exponentially… there is no doubt that we are just going to continue to grow,” Burns contended.

Nearly 250 movies and TV shows were shot in Georgia in the 2016 fiscal year bringing in an estimated $7 billion dollars to Georgia’s economy, $2 billion in direct spending. The state offers a 30 percent tax credit to TV and movie productions and paid out just over $600 million.
