ATLANTA (CBS46) -

A man is in critical condition at Grady Hospital in Atlanta after being stabbed multiple times as he was sleeping on the steps of a church early Friday morning.

The stabbing happened around 3 a.m. at the church, located near the intersection of Ivan Allen Boulevard and Peachtree Street in Atlanta.

The suspect who allegedly stabbed the man drove off and then was involved in a wreck with another vehicle a short distance away. That suspect was taken to an area hospital and was last listed in stable condition. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash sustained minor injuries and is expected to be okay.

The suspect has been identified as Kionte Riley.

The incident has people who frequent the downtown area alarmed.

"I often pass through this path at night so it give me something to worry about that someone else was stabbed," Jose Calunga said.

Riley was charged with criminal attempt to commit murder and aggravated assault with intent to murder. He was charged while at Grady Hospital then taken into custody. Once he is discharged from Grady he will be transported to the Fulton County Jail.
