CUMMING, GA (CBS46) -

Georgia State Patrol reports that a motorcyclist died after fleeing police in a high speed chase on State Route 400 Friday afternoon near the Dawson and Lumpkin County line.

It started when a police officer attempted to ticket a person speeding with a Suzuki motorcycle near the Dawson and Lumpkin County area.

The motorcycle fled while traveling south on State Route 400. (One northbound lane and one south bound lane on SR 400 were temporarily closed due to the crash and investigation.)

The driver, traveling at a high rate of speed, was weaving in and out of traffic until it struck the corner of a car.

The motorcycle then overturned and traveling into the median, where it struck a highway sign support, broke into several pieces and caught fire.

The driver was ejected from the motorcycle, who was wearing a helmet, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The motorcyclist did not have a license to operate the motorcycle at the time of the crash. Officials also believe neither alcohol nor drugs were a factor in the incident.

The case is currently being investigated.
