A man who shot an employee inside an Ingles location during a domestic dispute in Newton County on Tuesday morning is in police custody.  Investigators said 33-year-old Jimquez Swiney walked into the store, took out a handgun and fired two shots at his estranged wife who was working near the deli. There were about 20 witnesses, most of which were employees of the store.

“Right now he’s charged with aggravated assault. There are going to be a number of charges because there were a number of people in the store that were at risk that he actually pointed the gun at as well,” Covington Police Capt. Ken Malcom said.

Police say the shooting was the result of a domestic dispute at the location on Turner Lake Road near Highway 278 in Covington. Shortly after the incident happened, Swiney took off running.

“We had a drone up, we were doing everything we could to locate this individual before he could hurt anybody else or hurt himself,” Malcom said.

The woman, who is an employee at the grocery store, was shot in the arm once and sustained non life-threatening injuries. She was treated and released from the hospital, but police have not released her name.  The shooting stunned many faithful customers.

“I make a salad right there at the deli just about every morning or afternoon before I go into work so I was like I could have easily been here standing at the deli because I normally come in around that time,” Ingles customer Kara Bruce said.

Swiney was arrested a few hours later in a wooded area about a half mile from the grocery store after a witness, Travis Floid, spotted the suspect and called 911.

“I saw the guy come walking out from behind my house as I was making a sandwich and the next thing I know I just seen the red hat with the book bag on and I got in the car and followed him up the road and immediately called 911,” Floid said.
