The community-based group Stopping Atlanta Violence Effectively is a group that includes the Atlanta Police Department, the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, the Chaplaincy for the Sheriff's Office and churches from the Atlanta community.

This group has been raising funds for 18 months to sponsor a gun buy back project aimed at getting more guns off Atlanta streets.

The Organizer, Dr. R.L. White, who if the former president of the Atlanta Branch of the NAACP and a pastor for 47 years, engineered a gun buyback in 2015.

Since that project netted almost 1,000 guns, Dr. White has been adamant about getting guns out of the hands of people who have guns, and recognize that they are a threat to the little children in homes and are too easily procured on the streets.

The project presents the opportunity for owners to turn these guns in with a financial stipend.

Dr. White stresses that this is not an attempt to confiscate guns from gun owners, nor is it an effort to prevent gun ownership, but it is an attempt to draw attention to a crisis that is being faced by communities to prevent more violence as an ongoing experience.

It is to be noted that there are no questions asked, so that sellers are not threatened.

A total of $30,000 will be used for this event, which is set for June 15 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Atlanta Civic Center.
