ATLANTA (CBS46) -

A new Publix grocery store is opening in a part of town that hasn't had a grocery store in decades, and it's all part of a huge revitalization project for the neighborhood.

The store is located near the intersection of Marietta Boulevard and Moores Mill Road in northwest Atlanta, and people who live in the area say it means for this evolving neighborhood. The property sat empty for years after the old shopping center at the location was vacated and became a hotbed for criminal activity.

The new Publix is now the anchor store for a larger development in the works. Soon to come will be a bank, nail salon and several other retail businesses.

CBS46 talked with Kevin and Heather Shankwiler, who have lived in the area for 16 years. They say they're beyond excited that their community, which had always been s supermarket desert, is becoming something to be proud of.

"It's kind of funny that we're that excited about the opening of a grocery store but it's that important to this side of town," said Kevin. "It really means a lot to the future development that's going to happen over here."

"We're thrilled that that's even going to be within biking distance to us," said Heather, "so the 'live-work-play' is not something we thought we'd have out here. We're super excited because this one start of the development started the chain reaction, and we hope it continues all the way up Marietta Boulevard."

A ribbon-cutting was held Wednesday morning to commemorate the event. Mayor Kasim Reed and council member Felecia Moore were among the dignitaries on hand.
