A major overhaul is being made to a dangerous Atlanta intersection right near a charter school.

The changes are so new, drivers may not even notice it yet, or are just choosing to ignore it. Our camera caught several cars making a left turn from Memorial Drive onto East Lake Terrace, which is no longer allowed.

"Now that I know that, that's pretty inconvenient because that's the way I go to Maynard Terrace everyday," driver Tory Garrett said.

Georgia Department of Transportation made the left turn restrictions for safety reasons.

"I think it's fantastic and they need to do more along this intersection and Memorial in general," driver Christa Russie said.

A GDOT traffic study showed an average of about 6.4 crashes a year at the intersection. GDOT says that's not extremely higher than other intersections, but adds the changes should address turning conflicts that lead to crashes in this area.

"You won't have people stopped just outside the intersection waiting to turn left on East Lake Terrace, and also you won't have people trying to turn on Memorial with bad visibility," neighbor John Lott said.

Also, a lot of children use this intersection walking to school, raising another concern for safety.

"One of our neighbors was walking with her kids to school and a car actually rolled on the intersection and was very close to hitting them, so it happens very frequently," Lott said.

It cost just under $2,000 for the new signs and new road striping. Neighbors are just hoping drivers get the message.

"I think they have to put a cop around to enforce it because yesterday I saw around 19 cars turn and do it illegally," sixth grader Felix Patterson said.

The new signs were installed Wednesday.  New pavement striping was painted Thursday morning.
