Crews scramble to complete construction projects during school break

Thousands of drivers in Cobb County are forced to adjust their daily travel plans as several busy roadways are shut down for the entire Summer.

Projects ramped up across the county as crews race against the clock to complete the work at kids are home for the Summer school break. With considerably less traffic on the roads during June and July, the road projects swing into high gear.

The sooner the better for Cobb County resident Roy Hasty. Hasty lives on Hembree Road in northeastern Cobb County, just a few hundred feet from the noise of a project currently taking place near his home.

Traffic relief and infrastructure improvements are the driving forces behind these projects. New turn lanes are being put in at Davis Road, a pipe replacement is under construction on Kehely Drive and bridge work on Little Willeo Road are making commuters find alternate routes.

Back to Hembree Road, by far the most expensive of the four projects, more than $3 million of the $5 million total budget is being spent to build a roundabout in front of Pope High School. The traffic has become notoriously busy on school days and the time is now to make the necessary adjustments.

Michael Francis, the chief engineer at the Cobb County Department of Transportation, says there is no better time to do these projects than now, with highways and interstates considerably less congested without school traffic.

The projects are covered by special tax dollars already approved by voters.

Cobb DOT says they've managed these summer projects on time and on budget in years past, and they don't expect this summer will be any different.

All of the projects will likely wrap up in late July, right before school traffic resumes.

Here is a list of their expected completion dates, according to Cobb County DOT:

  • Kehely Drive: June 25
  • Davis Road: July 17
  • Hembree Road: July 17
  • Little Willeo Road: July 28
