Police say a man was killed Monday after a fender bender on I-285 in DeKalb County, just east of downtown Atlanta.

The incident occurred on the southbound lanes of the interstate at East Ponce de Leon Avenue.

Police say around 4 p.m., the victim, identified as 33-year-old Chris Ervin, was shot and killed by another driver, 39-year-old Johnnie Hudson, following the fender bender.

"The driver of the Lexus exited his vehicle and approached the pickup truck, and that's when the driver of the pickup truck fired through his closed window at the driver of the Lexus," said DeKalb County police spokesperson Shiera Campbell.

According to the police report, Hudson asked a witness who stopped at the scene to call 911 and told him, "I just shot him."

Hudson also reportedly told the witness Ervin didn't have a gun, which is why he was charged with murder, according to authorities.

"Self defense would be if the other person was threatening physical harm, was carrying a weapon, was physically assaulting the other person," said Campbell.

The incident slowed down traffic as drivers were traveling home on the busy interstate during rush hour Monday evening.
