FAYETTEVILLE, GA (CBS46) -

Retired Fayetteville Fire Marshal Martin Mundok was killed in an accident on June 5.

Mundok was traveling with his wife on I-85 near LaGrange when a pickup truck driver lost control of their vehicle and collided head-on with Mundok and his wife, according the city of Fayetteville's website.

The accident occurred during heavy rain just before 4 p.m., according to the site.

“Our department is shocked and saddened to learn about this tragedy,” said Fire Chief Alan Jones. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Mundok Family right now in this time of grief.”

Mundok was with the Fayetteville Fire Department for 28 years, the last 14 as the Fire Marshal, before retiring in January.

His wife, Mary, sustained non-life threatening injuries, according to officials.
