Family lost in Harbins Park rescued by Aviation Unit

Posted: Updated:

Gwinnett County Police are crediting a coordinated effort between the Aviation Unit, Uniform Patrol, and 911 Dispatch in rescuing a family of three who was lost for several hours inside Harbins Park in Dacula.

A woman called 911 around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday reporting that she was lost inside the park with her 4-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son.

She had apparently been lost in the park with her children since 1:00 p.m. without proper food, water, or the necessary items to care for her children for an extended period of time.

During the search, the woman was able to maintain contact with the dispatchers and relay when she could hear the helicopter overhead allowing them to pinpoint her location through the thick tree canopy.

Within 10 minutes of searching, the family of three was located about 200 yards from the main power line that borders the park.

The pilots were able to give hand signals to direct the family back towards uniform patrol officers who were close by on a trail.

Immediately after being rescued, the woman's cell phone battery died.
