ATLANTA (CBS46) -

While drivers may be heading to a leisure vacation this summer, road crews will still be hard at work.

Going around these areas aren't always an option for drivers.

"It's hard to detour away from the construction zones because we travel really far and detours from our route make it really pretty much prolongs it in a way," driver Troy Jones said.

So Georgia DOT wants drivers to use extreme caution when passing through these zones. Fifty-nine GDOT workers died in work zones over the last four decades.

"Of course we want motorist to be safe in a construction zone because there is a higher risk of an accident in a construction zones because of changing speeds and shifting lanes you have a lot going on," GDOT spokesperson Natalie Dale said.

Here are some of the major projects around Atlanta.

The ongoing Transform 285/400 interchange work continues on top of the perimeter. Also the lane construction along I-75 north to I-575 continues.
A new project drivers will deal with happens on Peachtree Road from midtown to Buckhead. A dedicated turn lane will be added to help ease traffic. There will also be road work on I-20 at the I-285 interchanges.

"I see it as they are trying to keep the highway safe so everyone can have safe travel back and forth," driver Marcus Allen said.

Since workers are doing their part to help his ride he will do his part to keep them safe.

"No texting, no on the phones or none of that," Allen said.
