ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Skydive Monroe is mourning the loss of a veteran instructor that was killed Saturday afternoon.

An official with the company confirmed to CBS46 that Joseph "Joe" Bennett, 49, died from injuries during a "hard landing" at the Monroe-Walton County Airport. The official said the incident started as a normal skydive but when Bennett came in to land and open his parachute, there was no time for it to flatten.

"He'll be sadly missed in the community. He was a good guy all around who loved NASCAR and skydiving," said Bill Scott with Skydive Monroe.

Medical personnel was on hand to help until fire and EMS arrived on the scene.

Bennett was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where he later died.

Scott said Bennett had at least 6800 jumps under his belt.
