ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Kerry Powell is co-owner of the C&K Auto used car dealership on Campbellton road. In 10 years of business here, he sees what his area needs.

"Right here it's okay, but if you get further up Campbellton Road, you have a lot of potholes and roads that really need to be resurfaced," Kerry said.

Resurfacing about seven miles of Campbellton Road is part of the $18 million improvement project.

Atlanta city council member Keisha Lance Bottoms explains this is a joint project between the city and Georgia Department of Transportation. It will include operational and safety improvements, drainage improvements and traffic light technology upgrades.

"That's great man. This is one of the worst intersection in my opinion on Campbellton Road right here," Powell said.

Bottoms says this is a proactive move preparing for future growth at Ft.  McPherson and the expansion of the Atlanta street car.

"It will go from Ft. McPherson, down Campbellton Road, to the Greenbriar Barge Road Park and Ride and that is game changer for the entire southwest community," Bottoms said.

Until that happens people are hoping the upgrades that are coming will also bring about economic development.

"Maybe if they start investing more money, you might get some people want to come in and invest in some businesses and stuff like that," Powell said.
