ATLANTA (CBS46) -

As a manhunt continues throughout nearly all of Georgia, Governor Nathan Deal pledges that the state will learn from this tragedy.

"We need to find out what the circumstances really were. 'How did it happen' and 'what can we do to prevent it.'" Governor Deal told CBS46.

Much of Georgia remains on guard with the two fugitives still on the run after they killed two Putnam County correctional officers. A determined Governor Deal is assuring the public that justice will be served.

"Sometimes it takes longer than we would like but I have every level of confidence that they're going to get these individuals and bring them to justice," he said.

Still, there are more questions than answers. The two officers were killed while transporting 33 prisoners. CBS46 asked Governor Deal if correctional officers have enough resources to keep themselves and others safe.

"I think they do but here again the investigation will determine whether or not we need more personnel whether or not we need more security in these transports," he responded.

Investigators are still working to find out how the two prisoners broke through a gate separating them from the officers.
