(Meredith) – Police arrested a couple after a FedEx deliveryman found their 5-year-old son alone in a filthy Bronx apartment.

The boy’s parents, Charlotte and Wilfred Lewis, reportedly went to work and left the boy alone in an apartment filled with feces, trash, rats, maggots, and bedbugs.

On Friday, a FedEx worker delivered a package to the home and needed a signature. The child answered the door and told the deliveryman his parents were not at home, The New York Post reports.

The man flagged down nearby officers for help. When police arrived at the apartment, the boy reportedly told them he had not seen his parent since the day before.

Police arrested the mom, a nurse at Montefiore Medical Center, while she was at work. The dad, a Metropolitan Transportation Authority technician, surrendered at a police station.

The couple has three other children, ages 12, 13, and 15, who were at school at the time.

Charlotte and Wilfred Lewis are both charged with four counts of child endangerment, according to CBS New York.

The Administration for Children’s Services told the station they are working with NYPD to investigate the incident.

The parents are being held on $15,000 bond. They are scheduled to appear in court this week.
