(CNN/Meredith) – A Colorado couple will have to start over for the second time after an accident left them without a home. The couple sold all their belongings and bought a boat. But two days into their adventure, it sunk.

Tanner Broadwell says the boat slammed into an object in the Gulf of Mexico, “we hit something in about eight or nine feet of water and it stopped the boat completely."

Nikki Walsh says she watched as water rushed inside destroying what they owned, "everything I’ve worked for, everything I’ve owned since I was a child, I brought with me. It's just floating away and there's nothing I can do."

Storms often shift the channel leading to the docks. Unforgiving sandbars wait to trap boats.

Kenny Keen, a local charter boat captain, says freak storms can easily capsize small watercraft, "we've also had several experienced captains hit that from time to time when there's been big storms and they try to get into the inlet and they don't hit the buoy just right."

Kenny says he’s seeing more sunken vessels recently, posing a threat to other boaters, "you could run into that mast or run into some floating debris that's just underneath the surface of the water and really hurt your boat or even hurt yourself."

While Tanner and Niki figure out what's next, they aren't giving up on their adventure, "our dreams didn't sink with the boat," said Niki.

The couple says it will cost an estimated $6,700 to remove their sunken boat from the Gulf. They are trying to figure out how to pay for the damages.
