(Meredith) – The family members of an elderly United Kingdom couple are livid after social workers sent them to two separate living facilities three miles apart.

According to the Daily Mail, Charles McGuigan and his wife, Jean, were forced to move out of their home due to health concerns. But tragedy struck when they were placed in two separate facilities.

92-year-old Charles was sent to Chester Park Care Home in Kinning Park while 92-year-old Jean was sent do Davislea Care Home in Govan.

“It is unacceptable,” Sandra Jackson, Jean’s daughter, told the Daily Mail. “What sort of society would treat a couple this way? It is a disgrace.”

And to make matters worse, Jean suffers from dementia. Jackson said Jean keeps asking for Charles, making the couple’s forced separation that much more heartbreaking.

One of the options the family is hoping for is to have Charles moved to Davislea, the home where Jean currently is living. The city council in Glasgow said they gave the option for the couple to move into a sheltered building together in the future, but denied Charles the option of moving into Davislea right now.

A spokesperson representing the Glasgow Health and Social Partnership told the Daily Mail that they “cannot comment on an individual case. We always seek to ensure couples are accommodated together where ever that is possible and appropriate.”
