A beautiful new park is getting people fired up in Cobb County because of its name. Some say it should be named for the area, while others want to see it named after a Confederate general.

Some commissioners want to name the Johnston River Line Park after Confederate General Joseph Johnston who once fought on the land during the civil war.

The Cobb County Parks Board recommended naming the it Mableton Discovery Park after the two roads it intersects. The park is located in the Mableton area, near the Chattahoochee River.

Residents came out with signs and letters at a Cobb County Commissioners meeting Tuesday night. There were differing opinions on the issue.

"Naming the park after a Confederate civil war general is not appropriate and we do not support it," said Mableton Improvement Commission board member Ray Thomas. "This gentleman led the Confederate army into four battles and lost three of them."

"We oppose renaming the area Mableton Discovery Park," said Ken Griffiths, with the Georgia Civil War Commission. "The park is not in Mableton as I understand it. It ignores the historical significance and the strategic and tactical military action which occurred at and around the site."

The commissioners approved the master plan to build the 103-acre park. But, they will continue discussions on what to name it.
