ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Atlanta police have made two arrests in a cockfighting bust.

The illegal ring was being run in the backyard of a southwest Atlanta home and neighbors on Waters Road Southwest had no idea it was going on.

"We found roosters, we found crates, of course the housing for those animals,” said Officer Hannah from the Atlanta Police Department. “We found various items that are used in cockfighting, hooks and brands and things like that.”

The items were located in the backyard of a home on 2700 block of Waters Road, in Southwest Atlanta home but the discovery was accidental.  APD says they were in the area investigating an unrelated 911 call of shots fired.

“While units were on scene speaking to that caller they heard three or four shots ring out across the street at 2750 Waters Road, at that point we set up a perimeter around the location and when we enter the backyard units on scene located the cock fighting ring and also a lot of hens and roosters," added Hannah.

APD’S animal cruelty division confiscated more 20 chickens some of which were dead.

"It's not common at all especially this day and age that you find a cockfighting ring especially on an unrelated call," said Hannah.

The cockfighting ring investigation is underway. So far two people have been arrested and they've been charge with multiple counts including cruelty animals.
