ATLANTA (CBS46) -

If you want to see how much development money is flowing into Atlanta look no further than the Georgia Aquarium.

The twelve year old facility announced a major expansion. With expansion 2020, aquarium will pump a million gallons of water and tens of millions of dollars into a new exhibit about sharks.

"We have some testings to do to make sure that people can get as close to the sharks as possibly get to safely and there will be some other experiences in there that we're working on for children as well that will be very interesting."

The objective is to demystify the hungriest most misunderstood denizen of the deep.

"This is going to be like nothing you've ever seen before once again exhibit viewing windows overhead views it's going to be really amazing."

But the aquarium is much more than a fancy fish tank. It's also a business incubator that transformed downtown Atlanta and the connecting communities.

"You all really started the rebirth of this area by believing in this area by believing in the west side and now we see what the transformation has been and it certainly is contagious."

The aquarium has generated thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in development with much more to come.

"We have about 15-million people who visit the centennial park every year and the amount of spending that takes place the amount of just events the sales tax all those things that add up that's where you get to the billions."

Expanding Atlanta's tourism footprint, the aquarium also expands the opportunities for success in other parts of the city.

"The aquarium has solidified that western side as not only where for visitation from all different parts of the world but also has kind of bridged the gap over to the Westside."
