ATLANTA (CBS46) -

She's feisty and sometimes controversial. On Wednesday, Kellyanne Conway, the senior counselor to President Donald Trump, had the attention of an audience made up of people with a wide range of political views.

Conway was a featured speaker at the seventh-annual National Prescription Drug Abuse and Heroin Summit, which is underway this week in downtown Atlanta. She serves as President Trump’s point person when it comes to battling the opioid crisis.

“We want to reduce the stigma and the silence that often attends opioid addiction," Conway told the audience of 2,800 of the nation's top researchers, advocates, policy-makers and law enforcement personnel.

Conway said President Trump is tackling the crisis on 3 fronts – calling for a disruption of the flow of illicit opioids into our country; better access to treatment programs; and a reduction in new prescriptions.

“So far nobody has said no to us. The tech companies have been in, the professional sports leagues, corporate America," she said. "Different folks have come to find out how they can help.”

She also explained the president’s desire for stiffer penalties for drug traffickers.

“I know these are very politically charged times," she said. "I can’t think of a more nonpartisan issue starving for bipartisan solutions than the opioid crisis and the drug demand, drug supply, the heroin epidemic that is really boiling our nation.”

In fact, someone on the opposite end of the political spectrum – former President Bill Clinton – is Wednesday night’s featured speaker at the summit.
