Atlanta dropped to 38 degrees Thursday morning, which was 11 degrees below average for this time of year. It also marked a rare 30-degree-day for April.

30's in April

Atlanta typically has three 30-degree-days each April, which is a day when the temperature is 39 degrees or colder. With Thursday's low of 38, it marked the first 30-degree-day of the month.

The most number of 30-degree-days in April on record for Atlanta is 10 in 1961.

30's in April rare in recent history

Thursday marked only the third time Atlanta has dropped into the 30's in April over the past five years. In fact, it was the first 30-degree-day in April since 2014, when it occurred twice.

30's in April

  • 2016 - 0 days
  • 2015 - 0 days
  • 2014 - 2 days

Still on schedule

Despite the few number of 30-degree-days we typically see in April, it's not unusual this late in the year. The last 30-degree-day typically occurs on April 11 each year.

The latest we've ever seen a 30-degree-day on record in Atlanta was June 1 in 1889.

Far from a record

Despite Thursday being well-below average, it wasn't a record. The coldest it's been on record in Atlanta for April 5 was 28 degrees back in 1881.

Last year on this day, the low was 60 degrees.

Colder outside Atlanta

It's typically colder when you drive into the suburbs outside Atlanta, and that was the case Thursday morning. While it was 38 degrees in Atlanta, many locations outside the city dropped to freezing temperatures of 32 degrees, and colder.

The coldest temperature our on exclusive WeatherBug Network was 30 degrees in Alpharetta.
