ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Some LGBT organizations say a basic level of understanding between the community and police can make a huge difference in safer interactions.

The Atlanta Police Department will be having a LGBT Citizens Police Academy to build good relationship between the department and community.

The department has had LGBT liaisons for years to also help in working on that relationship. But the department says this program will give them an opportunity to understand issues or concerns specific to the community as well as allow members of the community to see what the department is about.

They call this a diverse and progressive city where a program like this could thrive.

Those at Georgia Equality agree and say that basic level of understanding is key because they say nationwide there have been instances where members of the LGBT community have felt mistrust.
