An annual tradition gets underway Friday in Atlanta as the Dogwood festival kicks off at Piedmont Park.

It's a fun time for families, music and art lovers but if you're planning to go, make sure you load up on allergy medication. That's because we're experiencing the highest pollen counts the area has seen in years and with Spring in full bloom, so are airborne allergens.

When the pollen count reaches 1,500, that's considered extremely high. Thursday's pollen count was more than three-and-a-half times that amount at 5,300.

"It's a real problem because the pollen count is so high," said Dr. Stanley Fineman. "Right now we're seeing a lot of people with seasonal pollen allergies."

Dr. Stanley Fineman says currently the conditions for pollen are good.

"What patients should do so they don't have so many symptoms is one see an allergist so they can find out exactly they're allergic," said Fineman.

CBS46 talked with Karisa Hughes, who just moved to metro Atlanta from Virginia. She says allergens are much worse here.

"My husband has allergies the worst. He can't even speak," said Hughes. "He's a teacher at school and has lost his voice from all the drainage and everything caused by the allergies, and he's taking medicine and it's still really affecting him."

Meanwhile, the Dogwood festival opens its doors at 12 p.m. on Friday. Click here for more information on the event.
