Like spectators at a sporting event, Amy Medford and her four kids had a front row seat to the action. Funny thing is, it’s no game they’re cheering for.

It’s game over for a burned building in their Clarkston neighborhood at the Waverly Place Apartments.

“They would be very scared to live next to that, so they’re so glad it’s going to be gone now for the other kids that live here,” said Medford.

Crews demolished the three-year-old eyesore in minutes, which ironically was a sight to see.

“Every one that we take down makes the community a lot better. You can imagine the gratitude that citizens have when they clean up their communities,” said DeKalb County Community Development Director Allen Mitchell.

“It needed to be demolished," added Medford.

Another one bites the dust, which is a victory for the Medfords.

It was definitely a sight for sore eyes. Cleaning up blight has always been a top priority for DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond. The county cleaned up 19 single-family homes last year, but there is more work to be done.
