DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Tension over the bus driver strike in DeKalb County took a violent turn at an elementary school in Lithonia on Monday.

Things got physical when Patrice Brumfield, a parent who allegedly became upset over the transportation disruptions, confronted the school’s principal.

CBS46 has been in contact with administrators at Flat Rock Elementary, the communications team at DeKalb County Schools and to the police department, but no one has been willing to release the name of the mother who was arrested.

But the chaos that parents captured on tape inside of the school’s cafeteria is disturbing.

In the video, you can see the mother, in a purple shirt, clinging to the door, refusing to be pushed out. The principal, Dr. Malik Douglas, in the white shirt, scuffles with the mother, pushing and pulling until she’s free.

Criminal Attorney Brandon A. Thomas, who represents the mother, sent CBS46 the following statement:

My client was assaulted by the Principal after lawfully attempting to pick up her five year old child from school. While at the hospital being treated for her injuries, my client was personally contacted by the DeKalb School resource officer who threatened her that if she attempted to file a police report or press charges against the principal she would be arrested. After lawfully attempting to press charges after going down to the school police station, she was then falsely arrested while in the midst of filing a police report in clear violation of her constitutional rights. These charges should be dismissed and we are calling for a thorough investigation of the officer who threatened this mother with arrest if she chose to press charges and file a report against the principal. These bully tactics and constitutional rights violations by DeKalb County school police officers should not be tolerated.

Other adults in the building try to separate the two. The mother then stands on a chair and yells at the crowd and refuses to leave.

Andre Riley, director of Strategic Communications for DeKalb County Schools, said the cell phone video is misleading, but eyewitnesses said the mother was upset over travel disruptions related to the bus driver sickout.

Riley told CBS46 News that campus police were called to the scene. The mother was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and simple battery. We are still awaiting a formal statement regarding the incident, but hopefully, tensions will die down as the bus driver sickout is expected to end on Monday.
