DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A man was severely injured while pumping gas at a local gas station.

Police tell CBS46 the incident occurred at a gas station near Memorial Drive and Clifton Street.

Initial information states the man was pumping gas when he caught fire. According to the Atlanta Fire officials, the pump did not explode and the only thing that caught on fire was the man. He ran from the pump yelling for help and bystanders put him out.

According to Atlanta Fire Rescue, the male victim was transported to a local hospital with second and third-degree burns to over 80 percent of his body. The store owner said the man bought $5 worth of gas and a lighter. The man had pumped 72 cents worth of gas when the fire happened.

Fire officials continue to investigate the exact cause.
