THOMASTON, GA (CBS46) -

It's the rise of super commuters in Atlanta. More and more people are moving far away from the city and commuting more than 90 minutes to work.

CBS46 followed a commuter home from his job in midtown Atlanta all the way to Thomaston in Upson County.

The trip -- just one way -- took us more than two hours.

Dexter Douglas works at the front desk at his job in midtown Atlanta. To get there, he travels 81 miles each way from his home.

We decided to follow him on his commute home and time the entire ride. From 14th Street, down Northside Drive, to I-75, there was lots of traffic, sometimes at a standstill. Then to Highway 20, and Highway 19 to his front door.

“It is tiresome, I must admit, but the thing I always think about, I am going home, and I love my home, I love Thomaston,” said Douglas.

The total trip time was 2 hours, 12 minutes. That's one way.

So why would anyone want to go through that every day, twice a day?

“I get it, it is crazy…but I love coming home,” added Douglas. “You don’t hear traffic, you don’t hear police bird chirp, nothing. I love it!”

More than 100,000 people in and around Atlanta have super commutes, according to a new study by "Apartment List.”

That's at least 90 minutes on the road every day.

“The main reason I came down here is because of the house. I’m in a wheelchair. The house is accessible,” said Douglas. “I would love to work down here, but the pay is not the same.”

Atlanta’s super commuting legion has grown by 14 percent since 2005, now 9th in the nation and surpassing Los Angeles.

Rising housing costs in the city are largely to blame.

“I got a great deal for a house that would cost me twice as much in Atlanta,” said Douglas. “I wouldn't change it at all.”

Another big factor is school districts -- some commuters say it's worth the time in the car if their kids get a better education.
