GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Eric Montgomery is satisfied with Gwinnett County Public Schools now, but he may be more pleased with what could come if the proposed 2019 budget is passed.

With money from the current tax base and additional dollars coming from the state thanks to Governor Nathan Deal increasing revenue estimates, Gwinnett County Public Schools has just over 17 million extra dollars in funding.

Some of the options they are proposing to put some of that towards is a 2.25 percent pay increase for teachers and all school district employees.

So what does that 2.25% increase add up to? CBS46 did the math for you. Say a teacher making $45,000 a year. That would be an additional $337 dollars in her pocket. That would add up to about 2 ½ weeks of groceries for a family of four leaving over enough for 6 frappachinos.

Also the district is looking to add 10 more school resource officers.

'These new SRO's will enable us to respond to and cover our elementary schools as well as extend the amount of coverage we have for our SROs into the evening and weekend hours as well," said Bernard Watson with Gwinnett County Schools.

Which safety is certainly something parents think about.

"Having these resource officers available I think is a big thing. Safety has to be paramount and we want to make sure we keep the school, the facility, and all the occupants safe," said one parent.
