ATLANTA (CBS46) -

The toilets and tires left on the sidewalk tell the story of whats happening in Atlanta's Pittsburgh neighborhood.

"People coming into this community and dumping," says NAME.

Residents say it's an issue they've been dealing with for decades.

A city worker has been driving a front-end loader to this southwest Atlanta neighborhood twice a month for the past 20 years, and each time he picks up nearly six tons of trash and piles it into a dump truck.

A lot of the properties are vacant or condemned by the city.

Homeowner Amelia Miranda says she appreciates the city's help cleaning up her community.

The illegal dumping has gotten so bad that neighbors are now taking matters into their own hands.

"If we see trash or debris we pick it up ourselves and if it's too much we call the city. We try to take care of one block at a time."
