LAWRENCEVILLE, GA (CBS46) -

Gwinnett County Police have arrested a driver they say hit and killed an inmate while on work detail.

The accident occurred Wednesday morning on Lawrenceville Highway near the intersection of Lawrenceville Suwanee Road.

The inmate, later identified as 22-year-old Hunter O'Conner, died on the scene as a result of his injuries. O’Conner was following behind the work detail bus on foot to control approaching traffic when he was struck by a vehicle approaching from behind.

Jennifer Adkins, the 44-year-old driver of the vehicle who hit O'Conner, was determined to be at fault and has been charged with 2nd degree vehicular homicide, distracted driving, and following too closely.

She was transported to the Gwinnett County Detention Center without incident.
