18 major development projects being built in Atlanta

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

High rises continue to rise in Midtown Atlanta. In the past few days, two major new mixed-use, sky-soaring towers were announced.

Developers keep finding plots, adding high-rises and skyscrapers. Look in any direction in Midtown, and you will see construction.

According to the Midtown Alliance, there are 18 major development projects being built right now, including The Spectrum Apartments on Spring Street, 195 on 13th Street, and a hotel next to the Four Seasons.

The 22-story Ascent Tower is nearing completion. The 328 apartments and 176 hotel rooms on West Peachtree and 18th streets are scheduled to open this summer.

What will be tallest residential building in the city? The 53-story Opus Tower, which now has construction fences and a leasing office on 14th Street.

Progress comes with a price, and some say the city is already too congested.

“More buildings means more people, more cars, more traffic, more frustration,” said Tonya Jackson, who lives in Atlanta.

And now there are two new high rises coming to Midtown, according to the Midtown Alliance.

1125 Peachtree Street will be a 51-story skyscraper, filling an entire city block at 12th and Peachtree streets, just across the street from swanky restaurant STK. There would be more than 250 hotel rooms, dozens of condos, offices and restaurants.

Another new proposal is Midtown Union. It would sit just off the Downtown Connector at 17th and Spring streets, and include offices, a 255-key hotel, 354 residential units, and shops, including a grocery store and food hall.

We reached out to the city to find out about all the construction, and if high-rise projects will keep getting green lights. We were told someone would get back to us.
