PAULDING COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

New details involving a fatal crash that claimed the life of a beloved teacher in the Paulding County school district.

CBS46 has learned the driver who apparently caused the wreck works for the Paulding County Sheriff's Office. His name is Joshua Powell and the department confirms he was recently hired as a detention officer for the county.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, Powell had just finished a 12 hour shift when he crossed the center line on Dallas-Acworth Highway near Frey Road and struck a vehicle being driven by 32 year-old Emily Howell.

Howell, a beloved fourth grade teacher at Russom Elementary School in Dallas, was pronounced dead at the scene, less than three miles from the school.

Balloons and flowers now adorn the area where the crash took place.

Meanwhile, charges are pending against Powell.

CBS46 will keep you posted.
