Elderly pet owners having hard time caring for animals

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

“I’ve got my hands full taking care of her.”

Karen White takes care of her elderly and terminally ill mother.

“He just got too much for her,” White said.

Benji has been with the family the last 13 years.

“It’s just really hard because she can’t have the life she used to have and he can’t have the life he used to have,” White said.

When Evone’s health declines, they could no longer care for Benji.

“My cousin said he would take him,” White said.

But the family learned their cousin was stealing Benji’s pain medication and neglecting him.

“He had lost 50 pounds,” White said. “He had been chained to a tree and starved.”

So Susan Hunter stepped in to foster Benji.

Lifeline Animal Project says senior dogs tend to get ignored.

“Nine times out of 10 they are slower to get adopted,” Karen Hirsch said. “You don’t want to spend your golden years in the shelter, you deserve to spend them resting and having fun with your family.”

“Some people call fur babies their sons or daughters, they are a part of their families, so what do you do when you are elderly and can no longer care for their animals? Hunter said.

Families struggle with options: not wanting to take elder dogs to shelters, because people just don’t adopt senior dogs.

“Benji, Benji is over at Susan’s,” White said.

Evone still asked about her 15-year-old sweet boy.

“The dog gets old and really needs help,” White said. “It’s horrible to think about putting him down because no one would take him,” White said.

Here’s something to think about. Shelter officials say pet owners need to put their pets in their will so that if anything does happen, their animals will be taken care of.

In this situation, Benji’s family doesn’t want to take him to a shelter, they want a loving home for him. If you’d like more information or are interested in giving Benji a forever home, please contact this EMAIL.
