SANDY SPRINGS, GA (CBS46) -

The suspect in a Sandy Springs apartment burglary has been transported to the hospital after he was shot by police during a standoff.

Roswell Road from Hammond to Hildebrand was closed in both directions for several hours after the suspect was cornered by police, causing the standoff.

According to police, the activity stemmed from a burglary nearby. Police say three burglary suspects broke into a Sandy Springs apartment, but a security guard witnessed the break-in and called police.

Two suspects were taken into custody, but a third was able to get away. The remaining suspect was cornered by police behind a Dunkin Donuts and an animal hospital and was threatening to commit suicide.

According to Sandy Springs police officials, the suspect was shot by officers. The suspect's injuries do not appear to be life-threatening at this time, and the man was transported to a local hospital. No officers were injured during the standoff.

The GBI has been called in to investigate the shooting.
