Awtrey, Hammock, Frazier win top GSWA writing awards

SNELLVILLE, Ga. (AP) - Stan Awtrey of Golf Georgia, Will Hammock of the Gwinnett Daily Post and Ian Frazier of the Forsyth County News won the top awards in the Georgia Sports Writers Association contest announced Sunday.

Awtrey won in the category of 50,000-plus circulation for his story on Charlie Harrison teaming with Arnold Palmer.

Hammock won in the 50,000 or less category for his story on a merger leaving Armstrong Atlantic athletes in limbo.

Frazier won in the non-weekly category for his story on the West Forsyth gymnastics team winning a state title.

Winning for Best Daily Sports section were Savannah Morning News (Division I), Gwinnett Daily Post (Division II) and Forsyth County News (Division III).

Nathan Deen won four first-place awards and Dennis Knight had two first-place awards for Savannah, which also won for Best Sunday Section and Best Special Section.

In Division II, Hammock claimed four first-place awards and the Gwinnett Daily Post also won for Best Sunday Section. The Marietta Daily Journal won for Best Special Section and John Bednarowski won for Best Column and Best Columnist.

The contest was judged by Scott Rabalais of the Baton Rouge Advocate, Jim Halley of USA Today, Bob Holt of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and former USA Today Sports Editor Henry Freeman.
