DULUTH, GA (CBS46) -

Redevelopment could be the key to reviving the dying Gwinnett Place Mall located off I-85 and Pleasant Hill Road.

CBS46 first told you about the anchor store of Sears closing it's doors, well now we've learned a luxury apartment developer has bought the store site at Gwinnett Place.

Despite the empty stores, grassy parking lots and the loss of Sears, people still come to the mall.

"I just have my one store I go in and come right back out," said Sheila Garrett.

She comes right back out because the mall is "desolate, boring, um not much to do. Very unappealing."

That could all change now that luxury apartment management and development company Northwood Ravin has bought the old Sears store.

That's good news for the Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District Executive Director Joe Allen.

"It can be a major game changer for this area. This area has been successful over the last three or four decades but now it's time to transition into something different," said Allen.

The CID has been reaching out to 71 developers sharing information about redevelopment opportunities in the area.

Northwood Ravin hasn't said what the plans are for Sears, but these pictures show what they've done in other areas including a new apartment complex opening in Decatur.

Residential living is the something the CID would like to see in the area.

"So we want to bring residential into this area. Pare back some some of the retail and create a more internationally diverse, urban, livable, green dense community and I think that's where we are heading."

Shoppers here support anything that could bring life back to a once vibrant mall.

"Now that has certainly revitalized other areas in Atlanta and the metro area, so I think it's possible it could help. Yeah good for them."

Since their plans have not been released, there is also no time frame for when something could be built.
