NEWTON COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A woman who was getting mail from her roadside mailbox is dead after she was struck and killed by a vehicle.

The accident happened around 6:45 p.m. on Monday on Highway 212 in rural Newton County.

Police say 57 year-old Melissa Radcliffe of Covington was driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer and failed to maintain her lane, veering off the roadway. The vehicle began to skid sideways before striking Lori Spangler, 48, who was in her driveway after retrieving the mail.

Spangler was trapped under the vehicle and had to be extricated. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

Radcliffe had her two grandchildren in the vehicle with her at the time of the crash. They were both unharmed.

Radcliffe is facing charges of DUI, endangering a child, homicide by vehicle-first degree, and failure to maintain lane.
