GAINESVILLE, GA (CBS46) -

Here in the south, we love our BBQ and I found some of the best in the entire state.

Smoke House BBQ on Atlanta Highway in the Gainesville-Oakwood area is really good, and has been in business 40-years.

It all began with a lady everyone likes to call “meme.” She’s 81-years-old and she began the restaurant in the basement of her home, and now it has just flourished into this great place that everybody loves to come to, and all of the items that you see on the menu are made from scratch so it is really tasty stuff.

They received a perfect 100, and for that, congratulations! They are the winner of the Golden Spatula Award, and all of the BBQ is award-winning!

You have the half a rack of ribs, which is really good, the pulled pork with Brunswick stew, and baked beans and chicken salad is on the menu. Sides also include potato salad, mac ‘n cheese and the delicious banana pudding.

I tried the pulled pork sandwich. It’s one of my favorites when I come here to the restaurant, and boy that’s good!

Other good scores

  • In Clayton County, Pizza Hut on Mt. Zion Boulevard in Jonesboro scored a 93.

  • In DeKalb County, the Dairy Queen on Evans Mills Road in Lithonia is back on track after picking up a 97 on a re-inspection.
  • In Gwinnett County, we have an update on the Subway on Buford Highway in Doraville. Management finally showed up and corrected most of their violations, scoring 87 points and a ‘B’ on a re-inspection.

Critical violations at midtown Atlanta cafe

Health inspectors uncovered critical violations inside a popular Mediterranean café in midtown Atlanta.

Olive Bistro scored 58 points and a ‘U’ for unsatisfactory.

The report says two employees failed to wash their hands after touching a dirty trash can lid several times. Also, grilled chicken, beef lasagna and ravioli were at unsafe temperatures. Plus, inspectors said there was an excessive accumulation of dust, grease and old food debris on the floors, walls and ceilings.

The manager walked away from our camera after we walked in demanding an explanation, asking whether or not there was a problem with keeping food at the right temperature.

After being told that these are serious health violations, the manager said, “I’m asking you to leave because you have incorrect information, and if you don’t leave, I’m going to sue you and your television station.”

The manager insisted that the Fulton County Health Department incorrectly cited the restaurant and Olive Bistro is in good standing.

We did notice an old inspection score posted behind the counter.

“Are you going to post the accurate score?” I asked. “You’re telling people you got a 90 when you really got a 58.”
