GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Expired food, cross-contamination and mold in the ice machine: three violations health inspectors found inside a popular Gwinnett County restaurant this week.

But it’s not all bad as we dish all the details on a delicious Cuban restaurant with a perfect health score.

We decided to try something fun and a little bit different this week, visiting Mojitos at the Forum Shopping Center in Peachtree Corners. It’s traditional Cuban food and it’s absolutely delicious, and it’s also a brand new location for them.

Mojitos just opened up in Peachtree Corners. They have another location in Old Norcross that has been in business for over 10 years, but this new spot is fabulous. It’s a family-run restaurant that makes everything from scratch, and what’s really cool about this place is that the owners, Louis and Janine, perform in a band and provide some live entertainment so you can come out and have a good time.

The restaurant is also a partner with Atlanta United and you can come down to Mojitos for all the action.  I can’t wait to tell you about all the dishes on the menu, but first here’s this week’s best and worst scores.

During a surprise inspection, health inspectors uncovered critical violations at a popular spot on the square in Lawrenceville.

Local Republic scored 42 points and a “U” for unsatisfactory, and according to the report several plates, bowls and pans stored as clean had food debris on them. There was also a mold like substance in the ice machines. Plus, unwashed fruits were stored over ready-to-eat foods and the report says there was expired food.

“Obviously everyone wants to know, were you serving expired food to customers,” we asked.

“No, we hadn’t currently opened for the day,” said Local Republic owner Chris Collin.

Management said the health department cited them for having expired soy milk in the kitchen, a problem they said they resolved immediately.

But during our visit, we spotted another violation.

“I do have a problem in that you have a 96 posted out there at the door, but you really have a 42 and that’s misleading to customers, is it not,” I asked.

While they didn’t have a lot to say about that, management insisted their restaurant is safe and they’ve had a history of As and Bs on health inspections. Plus, they scored a 92 on a follow-up after our visit.

Now to some good health scores:

In DeKalb County, Shake Shack on Ashford Dunwoody Road inside Perimeter Mall scored a 92.

In Fulton County, we have an update on the Olive Bistro in Midtown Atlanta, which we reported on last week. When we visited, Olive Bistro had a “U” for unsatisfactory, but we learned this week that management corrected most of their violations and was rated at a 96 and an A on a reinspection.

In Cobb County, Old South BBQ on Burbank Circle in Smyrna received a 98.

Back at Mojitos, they picked up a perfect 100 at their new Peachtree Corners location, and for that we say congratulations! They are this week’s winner of the Golden Spatula award!

Boy that’s good!
