DOUGLAS COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A local school district says it has seen so many hungry kids in their county that they have decided to launch free meals before and after school.

Douglas County Schools nutrition officials tell CBS46 they are not only extending the free summer lunch program, they will also be adding dinner to the menu as well.

"It's really a passion for me, a deep heartfelt passion," said Clarence Martin, a chef with Douglas County Schools.

Nearly 63 percent of the students in his district need his meals for free.

"Me being a chef coming from working in kitchens, cooking for presidents, governors, and everything. I want to bring that quality to our kids in Douglas County," said Chef Martin.

The nutrition team realized free summer lunch just wasn't enough. They are launching the county's first ever free supper program for students this fall.

"When you're looking at supper, if you have a mom who works later in the evening or doesn't get home until a certain time then you have that student that may have eaten at 10:30 and may not eat again until mom gets home at seven," said Danielle Freeman, Executive Director of School Nutrition.

In order to get free dinner, a child must be enrolled in a sport or after school activity.
