Atlanta is a target area for cargo thefts because it’s a major transportation hub. Thieves strike on the Fourth of July for one simple reason -- a lot of people have the day off, which means a lot of trucks are left unattended.

Freddy Nightengale says in the last 30 years, a handful of people have tried to break into his big rigs, but were unsuccessful.

A lot of truck drivers aren’t so lucky.

One study says in the last five years, there were more than 100 cargo thefts in the U.S. and Canada between July 1-7. It says most of them happened in California, Texas and Georgia with thieves taking everything from electronics to food and beverages.

“That’s, I think, a bigger thing. They take the whole truck, then they find the truck later with no freight in it,” said Nightengale.

Truckers tell me protecting your pricey cargo means using common sense.

“Park in a high traffic area where there’s a lot of people present,” said Nightengale.

You also want to make sure that area is well lit.

The study says truckers should also avoid high-theft areas, like Atlanta, Los Angeles and Miami.

I found out cargo theft is such a big problem here, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has an entire unit dedicated to investigating these cases.
