ATLANTA (CBS46) -

The CBS46 Bulldog learned exclusively of an accidental breach of records at Georgia Tech involving everything from grades to home addresses.

Now Georgia Tech says nearly 8,000 students were impacted, and student groups are threatening possible legal action and federal complaints, in the wake of our reporting.

"It is kind of uncomfortable, ya know," one student told us on campus.

Tech tells The Bulldog, staffers in the College of Computing inadvertently attached a spreadsheet containing confidential student data and blasted it out to students in a mass email.

Some of the data shared included:

  • ID numbers
  • Home address
  • Visa info
  • GPA
  • Academic standing
  • Hours earned

Students were notified of the leak via campus email.

The data leaked could be used to assume someone's identity, and at the least, cause embarrassment to many.

It is also federally protected data, making the leak a serious issue for the school.

Tech says the staff involved have been banned from accessing student records while the investigation is underway, and they are cooperating with the U.S Department of Education as well as the state system.

Students can follow the link below to file a federal complaint if one's information has been leaked: https://studentprivacy.ed.gov/file-a-complaint
