EAST POINT, GA (CBS46) -

An East Point firefighter traveled back to his hometown of Belize City, and was able to bring back hundreds of pounds of shoes and clothes for those in need.

Krishna Craig, a three and a half year veteran with the East Point Fire Department, undertook the humanitarian efforts after attending an East Point Community garage sale. Craig purchased a few shirts and shoes with the intent of distributing the items to family members. After sharing his plans with one of the vendors at the garage sale, the resident donated the leftovers for the cause.

Within a week, 100 pounds of donated clothing from firefighters and their families were collected. Craig was able to deliver 869 pounds of items to his village to give to men, women, and children.

"Many of the people living in the village remembered me as a child, so for them to see me as a career firefighter, and giving back to the community that raised me, means everything," said Craig.

Craig returned Sunday from an eight day trip to Belize. He says he would like to continue collecting clothing and shoe donations and plans to make a trip to his hometown at least twice a year.
