ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Several organizations are calling on Secretary of State Brian Kemp to resign his position as he continues his run for governor of Georgia.

Common Cause, Georgia Alliance for Social Justice and Georgia Democrats want Brian Kemp to step down as he campaigns for governor.  Their reasons given include  "conflicts of interest", "ethically wrong" and "unprecedented in the state", for him to oversee the election he's running in.

The optics of it may cause concern. But, as CBS46 did some fact-checking, there are precedents on both sides of the argument.

In 2010, Republican Karen Handel stepped down as secretary of state to run for governor citing "perceived conflicts of interest." In 1996, Democrat Max Cleland resigned as secretary of state to run for U.S. Senate.

But, there are others who stayed on.

In 2006, Democrat Cathy Cox did not resign while she ran for governor. In 1998, Democrat Lewis Massey also kept his post as secretary of state as he ran for governor. But in Kemp's case, he appears to be standing firm and won't resign.

When CBS46 asked Kemp for a response, he gave us an answer that did not address our questions.

The Georgia Alliance for Social Justice says, if Kemp doesn't resign, protestors will ratchet up their efforts, calling for a protest August 19.
