Neranenah launches performance series in metro Atlanta

ATLANTA, Ga. (CBS46) - Neranenah, the performance series formerly known as the Atlanta Jewish Music Festival, has announced a new series of fall concerts in collaboration with the Breman Museum. The Side by Side concert series is “a love letter to showcase how Jewish contributions paved the way for much of what can be seen today in American arts and culture,” according to Neranenah Executive Director Joe Alterman.

Each performance will take place at a different location in metro Atlanta, including the Plaza Theatre, The Loft and the Atlanta History Center.

The full schedule is below.

Aug. 21 at the Plaza Theatre: Live at Mister Kelly’s and Joe Alterman Trio performance

The first event will show the documentary Live at Mister Kelly’s. The documentary spotlights George and Oscar Marienthal, the owners of the Chicago nightclubs London House and Mister Kelly’s. The nightclubs helped launch the careers of many of the mid-20th century’s biggest names, including Barbra Streisand and Richard Pryor. Neranenah Executive Director Joe Alterman scored the film and will perform selections from the score after the screening. The screening will begin at 3 p.m. with a performance at 5 p.m.

Aug. 25 at Atlanta History Center: An Evening w/ Ben Sidran & Leo Sidran

Award winners Ben and Leo Sidran will hold a jazz concert at the Atlanta History Center starting at 7:30 p.m. The pair have won helped Grammy and Oscar award winners and won awards themselves for their songwriting and production.

Aug. 26 at the Margaret Mitchell House: Musical Shabbat Feat. Hello, Goodbye & Peace Ensemble

This Shabbat led by Rabbi Micah Lapidus will feature both Shabbat prayers and secular blues and jazz songs with a strong focus on justice performed by The Hello, Goodbye and Peace Ensemble. This event promises a “unique and truly ‘Atlanta’ musical experience.” The Shabbat begins at 7 p.m.

Aug. 27 at the Loft: Eric Krasno & The Assembly

Eric Krasno has had a long and storied career. The two-time Grammy winner and former member of funk band Lettuce has produced and written songs for Norah Jones, Pretty Lights, Tedeschi Trucks Band and 50 Cent and performed with the Rolling Stones, John Mayer and Dave Matthews Band. The guitarist released his third solo album Always earlier this year. The performance will begin at 8 p.m.

August 28 at Round Trip Brewing Co.: The Comedy of Jessica Kirson

Comedian and producer Jessica Kirson will perform a stand-up set at Round Trip Brewing Co. She has appeared on the Howard Stern Show and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, as well as produced the feature-length documentary Hysterical. The documentary focuses on women in comedy and features names such as Margaret Cho and Chelsea Handler. The performance will begin at 7 p.m.
