(Meredith) -- If you have ever called in sick because you were hungover, be thankful you don't work for Chipotle.

The fast-casual restaurant chain has nurses call employees who call off sick to make sure those employees are actually sick and not just hungover, according to Business Insider.

Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol said at a conference Wednesday that nurses call employees to ensure they are actually sick. Once they validate their illness, Chipotle then pays the employee to take a sick day to recover.

However, Niccol said the policy is not just to punish employees. Rather, it is part of the company's food safety practices that were implemented after Virginia customers suffered a norovirus outbreak in 2017. Investigation into that outbreak found that an employee was working while he/she was sick, Business Insider reports.

Niccol did not say what punishment, if any, an employee faces if the nurse discovers the employee called off work for being hungover.
